Eligibility

Existing sculptures, as well as concept proposals for new sculptural work, of both permanent and temporal/semi-permanent works will be considered. Successful applications will propose sculptures that draw connections between the arts and earth sciences; speak to conservation, sustainability efforts, or environmental stewardship; highlight the natural beauty of the Mississippi River; or speak to the resiliency of the natural world, especially the Mississippi River. Ten sculptural works will be selected to be displayed at the Port of Dubuque from August 2020 to July 2021. Application is free and artists can submit completed works or those to be fabricated by Summer 2020 install dates. Artists can submit multiple sculptures for consideration but must complete a separate application for each artwork. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. CST on Friday, May 1, 2020. Number of Participants

Any artist creating sculptural work suitable for outdoor public display is encouraged to apply. Up to 10 works will be chosen; artists can submit multiple pieces for consideration and may have more than 1 work chosen for the exhibit.

Program Description

Art on the River is part of the Dubuque City Council’s ongoing efforts to foster diverse arts and culture experiences that will improve the social and cultural vibrancy of the city. The 2020-21 Art on the River exhibition marks the 15th anniversary of the program. Since its inception, the program has featured 132 sculptures representing the work of 82 artists at the Port of Dubuque. A 90-acre riverfront campus welcomes 200,000+ visitors each year with features like the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, the Grand River Center, Grand Harbor Resort and Waterpark, Diamond Jo Casino, the historic Dubuque Star Brewery, Dubuque Shot Tower, and the Port of Dubuque Marina. The 15th Anniversary of Art on the River is paid for in part by the Iowa Tourism Office.
