ASTRA - A Space Travels Around is a traveling artist residency, inviting emerging artists to work in selected cities around the world. The criteria of selection for each city is one: ASTRA follows Art fairs, Biennials and Cultural Events. ASTRA has decided to be itinerant in order to reach a larger audience, promote cultural exchange and to give possibility to residents to develop their practice in unique environments. Our aim is to support artists who lack the resources to turn talent into opportunities for their future. The purpose is to best match the developmental stage of an artists, with what ASTRA can best offer. This includes, but is not restricted to, studio space for creative development, advice in each artistic practice, professional introductions, inclusion in exhibition and/or publications.
The second volume will be held in Spoleto (Italy), an ancient city surrounded by hills in the region Umbria. Spoleto is recognised as a world heritage site by Unesco and renowned for the Festival dei Due Mondi, held every year during the summer, since 1958. The artists are invited to reside in the 14th century Franciscan hermitage of Santa Maria Maddalena, situated in Monteluco, a limestone mountain covered by woods.
