Eco Practicum is a desk-free school for ecological justice based in the Catskill Mountains. We provide hands-on programs to bridge the gaps between learning and doing. We produce a variety of experiential learning opportunities, and run a creative residency program for artists seeking to incorporate regional environmental themes into their practice. Our programs are interdisciplinary, rooted in complex systems theory, and place-based. Eco Practicum was founded in 2010 as a project of Arts and Ecology Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was formed to conduct research and produce programming designed to create cultures and technologies for regenerative environmental stewardship. Why arts and ecology? Because creating an ecologically just civilization calls for inspiration, resourcefulness, imagination, and camaraderie. Because responding to global inequities and environmental degradation requires determination, solidarity, knowledge, and skills from each of us.
The Catskills Creative residency takes place at a beautiful and rustic summer camp in the Catskill Mountains region of upstate New York, in the town of Liberty. The site includes an educational farm as well as 125 acres of fields, forest, and wetlands. We will spend our days creating, harvesting food from the farm for our meals, sharing works in progress together by the fire at night, and sleeping in simple wooden cabins. Catskills Creative Residency is designed for creative practitioners at any stage in their careers, and especially for those whose practice often takes them outside a private indoor studio and thrives outdoors, in community with others.
