About

Established in 2007 ComPeung is the first independent and longest ongoing AiR program in Thailand. Well over 100 artists from around the world have completed residencies with us. At ComPeung you will experience solitude, nature, and a micro-community of other artists. Our goal is to offer artists the rare opportunity to focus solely on the development of new work or ideas, and themselves as artists. For artists who need time away from regular commitments to finish current projects, reflect on their practice, or explore and develop new works, ComPeung is the ideal place to do so. In an unregimented and relaxed atmosphere, artists have complete freedom to focus on their work. By experiencing a new setting and culture artists who stay at ComPeung will be pushed beyond their comfort zones in a way that is supportive of creating work not imaginable at home. For more information including our previous and current artists, please visit our website at http://compeung.org/

Local Information

ComPeung is located in Doi Saket, Northern Thailand. Doi Saket district is a 40 min drive north-east of Chiang Mai City. It is predominantly a rural farming area, containing a mixture of rice fields on the valley floor and orchard and other farming on the hillsides. ComPeung offers warm, engaging hospitality with fresh daily produce from the local market for delicious home-cooked meals and provides all the basic necessities for living in a semi-rural, tropical area. Hidden behind a line of teak trees near public ponds, the ComPeung site began as just a piece of empty farmland without any facilities. Now after over 10 years of sculpting this micro community from scratch–planting all the trees, bringing in the road, water, and electricity, and building the earthen houses–with the help of resident artists, our friends and family ComPeung has become a peaceful garden oasis.
