Event Horizon Crete Artist in Residency
About
Event Horizon is a Crete based building for the arts, music and literature. A rural retreat for production and experimentation. This artist in residency opportunity offers private creative space free of charge, it is set in five acres of stunningly beautiful wild olive groves close to the sea. The building is created from used shipping containers and is completely insulated. Using the cosmological phenomenon of the Event Horizon as an analogy for art as a transcendent concept, there is time and space for creativity. We selected three 12 m steel dry shipping containers from a used cargo dealer in Athens. The containers were then cut in half due to the road access restrictions around Fourni Village. This restriction dictated the design layout which forms a square tunnel with an atrium for natural light. The 130 sqm container building is insulated with Polystyrene foam-board and Marine Ply cladding on the outside walls and PolTherma DS sandwich panels on the roof.
Local Information
Event Horizon is set in 5 acres of private land outside Fourni Village, East Crete and is close to the sea. The land is primarily an olive grove at the beginning of the Havgas gorge. There is a gigantic Mediterranean Oak spread so broadly that it becomes a tree house. There are plenty of places to walk and muse on the land. It is effectively a nature reserve and so there are no crazing animals allowed resulting in a plethora of Cretan Fauna visible all year round. The wild flowers and wildlife are to be respected and not collected in any way. Fourni is the nearest village 2 k from Event Horizon, a two minute drive or a 20 minute walk. Fourni is a very diverse place due to the community of artists and shepherds. There are three 'kafeneon' tavernas with excellent food where the Cretan locals hang out.
