Gallery Aferro is a platform for the exchange of ideas in service of advancing human dignity and beauty, with a primary focus on sound and visual arts as the vehicle, proudly located in Newark, NJ.

Local Information

For more than 15 years, resident artists at Gallery Aferro have had 24/7 access to large studios, ongoing first consideration for a range of on and off-site opportunities, access to our studio blog, and generous one-on-one career and technical support from staff. The growing network of residency alumni is an increasingly powerful, multigenerational group of contemporary artists working across media. The gallery is located just 5 blocks from Newark Penn Station and is walking distance to other galleries in the city as well as a wide range of local businesses and notable sites. Many alumni have commented that the building is a kind of context within a context: an evocative repurposed 20,000 sq. ft. building in almost ceaseless use by a varied and lively population of gallery staff, volunteers, artists, youth, and community residents, all within the dense cultural, architectural and historical context of NJ’s largest city.
