About

Help Ourselves is an innovative Mentorship and Residency program with roots all over the city. We plant seeds in traditionally low income communities that are rapidly changing as a result of gentrification, set up a mentorship program with underserved youth and implement an education and residency program in under utilized spaces.

Local Information

Help Ourselves, in collaboration with Saint Augustine’s Church, will offer 3 artists and 2-4 installation artists or collectives the chance to participate in a summer residency and installation series. Summer Studio Program: Three studio artist, writers, actors, or musicians will be given a free studio in Lower East Side in exchange for their commitment to teach 3 free, 1.5 hour long classes a week. Each artist will receive a private studio and furnishing. Artists interested in displaying their artwork during the course of their residency will have staff and mentee support in finding a unique location or working with one of our satellite galleries. Slave Gallery Installations: We will offer individuals and groups the chance to install in one or both of Saint Augustine’s historic Slave Galleries and upper balconies, asking them to create site specific work that relates to the historic, 190 year old Landmark church and to the significant New York history that it preserves.
