The Icelandic Textile Center residency seeks to promote an atmosphere of creativity, experimentation and reflection for artists and scholars working inside the textile field. We accept submissions from emerging, mid-career, and senior level artists and scholars all year round (open call). The residency is situated in a historic building and former Women’s College in Blönduós, northwest Iceland, known as Kvennaskólinn. The residency can accommodate 8 - 10 artists every month. Each resident is provided with his/her own bedroom equipped with a small desk and scenic view, access to studio facilities and open plan work space in the communal studio. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. Artists in residence also have access to the tapestry of Vatnsdæla (both located within the building), and the Textile Museum next door. Since it first opened in 2013, the Textile Center residency has hosted over 250 textile artists and scholars from all around the world.
The Textile Center is located in Blönduós, a small, rural village on the edge of the sea in the north-western coast line of Iceland. It is a remote place without city conveniences, so please be prepared in mind and when it comes to materials. The town has a population of approx. 1000 people, which includes provinces and surroundings. In Blönduós, you'll find grocery store "Kjörbúðinn", flower / gift store, two gas stations, a public library, Textile Museum, several restaurants / bar, a medical center and pharmacy, schools (kindergarten & elementary school), sports hall with a gym, outdoor pool with two hot pots and a steam room. There's a hairdresser, bank, post office, mayor’s office, police station, church, several smaller companies, businesses and many farms. In the old part of town, there are several guesthouses / a small hotel, tourist information and handcrafts store.
