About
INSTITUTO is a focal point for different forms of cultural expression, located in the heart of Porto. The team’s interests and backgrounds have given rise to a programme that diverges from the field of architecture to encompass the visual and spatial arts, critical thinking and multidisciplinary collaborations. We seek to encourage the creation and exploration of new contemporary discourses through interdisciplinarity, the informality of the space and the will to tackle burning issues in today’s society. INSTITUTO hosts residencies for artists, architects and researchers who are looking for an opportunity to live and work in Porto for a period of up to 3 months before presenting their work at a public event. We accept self-funded spontaneous applications. We particularly welcome proposals related to architecture, critical spatial practices, urban culture and postcolonial subjects, with a tangible public and social impact.
Local Information
INSTITUTO’s location on Rua dos Clérigos, close to some of the city’s main landmarks - like the Torre dos Clérigos, the Luís I bridge or the cathedral Sé do Porto - has led to increasing activity and public attendance. Located in the back building you find yourself further away from the typical downtown buzz. Once you leave the buidling, you can find yourself being surrounded by a number of good restaurants, bars and shops. One of Porto’s most important train stations, São Bento station, is just around the corner. Also several Metro and bus stations can be reached easily, creating a link to different lines covering the whole city.
