About
Unión de los Rios is a non-profit association working to create a space for education, ecology and the arts at Finca La Herradura in Las Alpujarras, Andalusia. Unión de los Rios aims to create enabling conditions for the emergence of a situated, complex, life-supporting natureculture; a living tapestry woven from the fabric of the land by all of its inhabitants and visitors, human and more-than-human. The project is made up of three core strands; a land-based democratic learning community for young people aged 6 - 18 called Banana Mountain, a small residential space and accompanying infrastructure for learning, unlearning, creative practice and collective process, and the exploration of eco-centric stewardship practices which might meet human needs and expand the possibilities for other forms of life to thrive.
Local Information
The home of Unión de los Rios is Finca La Herradura, a 22 Hectare semi-feral farm 7km outside Orgiva in Las Alpujarras, Granada, Andalucia, Spain. Finca La Herradura is also a family home. The place where we - Laura, Luke, our young son, and our animal friends - live our lives. The place where our son was born and where we hope he can live for as long as he chooses to. Home-away-from-home to many friends and family who’ve given love and labour, sweat and tears, to the long bumpy process of co-creation that brought us here. Our intention in creating Union de los Rios was/is to share Finca La Herradura as both a site and protagonist in life-enabling activity. While we hope to continues expanding our infrastructure, we’re not aiming to create a shiny centre or impersonal institution, but rather, to offer our hearts, guts, paradoxes, messy realities, and home, to an ongoing process of life-creating-conditions-for-more-life, destination unknown.
