Eligibility

Artists eligible to apply to MacDowell are those that are: Creating an original work of art; are at least 21 years of age; are not currently a student enrolled in a degree program; able to submit a complete application. Applications are online and can be found through MacDowell's website. A complete application is one which the applicant can provide a description of a proposed project and a work sample that is in the same discipline and genre as their proposed project, and provide five artistic achievements. All of these items are submitted through the online application which opens January 15, 2026. The submission deadline is February 10, 2026.

Number of Participants

MacDowell hosts 20-30 artists in residence. Artists arrive and depart throughout the week, so the community is ever changing. Only artists accepted through MacDowell's application process may be in residence, guests are not able to stay. A small percentage of artists come to MacDowell as collaborators of small groups of 2 or 3.

Program Description

MacDowell provides time, space, and an inspiring residential environment to artists of exceptional talent. A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to eight weeks. Financial Assistance: MacDowell offers need based financial assistance to cover the costs of 90% of direct travel to and from the residency, as well as a one time stipend to cover expenses that artists expect to incur while in residence, including rent, lost income, and childcare, for those that qualify. Qualification forms are available to those artists accepted through MacDowell's application process.
