About
6okken is an artist-run residency and arts organisation at the foot of Mt. Fuji, on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, Japan. Six houses stand together in a small village, and the eight members, across contemporary art, architecture, photography, design and editing, live in them, keeping up their own practice while running the residency. Two of the six houses are for residents: your group has a whole house to itself for one to three four-week terms, sharing the garden, a garage for larger work and a common living room and studio. Nothing has to be produced or presented. Incorporated as a non-profit in 2023, 6okken also runs workshops, art festivals and joint projects with cultural organisations and municipalities in Japan and abroad. More than 50 artists from over 22 countries have stayed so far.
Local Information
6okken is in Oishi, a small village on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi in Yamanashi, Japan, looking straight at Mt. Fuji. Tokyo is about two hours away by highway bus, and we pick you up at Kawaguchiko Station on your first day. The lake is a short walk downhill, the nearest bus stop is 13 minutes on foot, and a member drives you into town up to twice a week for groceries or research around the area. Quiet, dark at night, and very good for concentrating on your work.
