About

Viafarini is a creative incubator and a hub for the promotion of visual arts located in Milan at Fabbrica del Vapore, collaborating with other renowned organizations in Italy and abroad. Viafarini is the first non profit Archive promoting artistic research in Italy since 1991. Its know-how about documentation, art consultancy, production, residency, education, communication and exhibition services are put at disposal for interdisciplinary collaboration projects. Since 2008 VIR Viafarini-in-residence, located in the historic organization’s premises, in via Carlo Farini 35 in Milan, is available as a shared studio for artists, curators and professionals of the cultural and creative sector. VIR is a place open to dialog between visual arts and other forms of expression.

Local Information

VIR Viafarini-in-residence is located in Isola (also known as Isola Garibaldi), a working-class area built between 1880 and the beginning of 1990; it lies north of the city centre outside the ancient Porta Garibaldi which it is separated from by the homonymous station and the new neighborhood of Porta Nuova characterized by iconic skycraper Vertical Forest and one of the biggest Park in town. Nowadays, it has a differentiated socio-economic structure: it has a high percentage of offices, a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, a significant number of quality artisan enterprises and cultural associations, plus, a mixed residential urban fabric comprising different ethnic and social components. Isola hosts many cultural initiatives (such as Flash Art, independent art spaces and private galleries).
