Eligibility
The main criterion for acceptance to Byrdcliffe’s AiR program is artistic excellence or a demonstrated commitment to one’s field of endeavor. Byrdcliffe seeks to pull together artists from varying perspectives and demographics, engaging in a broad range of artistic practices. Creatives working in all disciplines at all levels are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to: Visual artists (2-D and 3-D) in all mediums, writers, musicians, weavers, composers, craftspeople architects, actors, filmmakers, playwrights, and many other practices. Ceramics may apply for 1, 2, or 4 sessions. Byrdcliffe is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity for all persons. Diverse gender identifications, people of color, LGBTQIA communities, and other historically underrepresented artists are encouraged to apply. Regretfully Byrdcliffe is unable to accommodate young children at this time. Byrdcliffe offers ADA compliant access to its main residency building and some studios.
Number of Participants
Byrdcliffe offers three distinct artist housing programs, Monthly, Seasonal, and Annual, hosting over 90 artists each year. Some variations accommodate couples and teams, read on. -Our Monthly AiR Program accommodates 16-20 at a time in two communal buildings and two independent live/work cottages. Communal living includes a private bedroom and separate private studio. The two independent live/work cottages take part in all the same programming and are available to couples. -Our 5-Month Seasonal program is comprised of 8 simple Arts & Crafts style houses. Artists, couples (in which at least one member is an active artist), and teams (both collaborative and non-collaborative) spend five months working independently in private live/work cottages on Byrdcliffe’s 250 acre mountain campus. Applicants should peruse our website to determine suitability of accommodations unique needs before applying. -Our year round housing mirrors our seasonal program in 8 winterized buildings.

Program Description
In our Monthly Air Program, artists may choose between communal living consisting of a private bedroom in a shared building with a separate private studio OR apply for one of two private live/work cottages in close proximity. Cottages may accommodate couples depending on their practices. All monthly Artists are invited to participate in open studio, work-share, field trips, pot-lucks, etc or are free to work in solitude during their entire stay. Residents have the opportunity to participate in an exhibition at Byrdcliffe’s Kleinert/James Center for the Arts the Spring following their residency. A variety of full and partial fellowships are available to offset the $700 per session fee.
