Program Description

The evolution of the graphic novel over the last 60 years is complex, and the mainstream history of that evolution only scratches the surface of how independent writing/drawing, alternative perspectives and comics rooted in the art world, rather than the mainstream publishing/superhero sphere, have contributed to and inspired the way we think about comics in 2021. This course is an opportunity to live, work and study with one of the most acclaimed pioneers of that underground tradition, Gabrielle Bell. It's about using the language of images and words together to create compelling stories based on your personal life. At the end of the week, you'll have accumulated several short comics, each one stronger than the previous, and a confidence that you can create a comic, from the beginning to the end, about whatever you like.
