Eligibility

The residency is open to writers from all fields of any age, sex and nationality to further their research or writing relevant to the tangible and intangible heritage of Sicily, its institutions, the current social, political and economic situation in Palermo, Southern Italy, the Mediterranean and the global South.

Number of Participants

Each year, SIS organises several Independent Residencies and Thematic Residencies, during which writers from every field and origin engage in the production of their own individual research based on a common theme, creating exchange and extending dialogue with other residents, with the region of Palermo and with their respective intellectual networks. There are five residencies. The residency at Villa Adriana in Danigarci, shared with a total of four residents, range from one to three months, according to the needs of each candidate. The residency at Spazio Arké of Palazzo Martinez Tagliavia Mango is ideal for a single writer whose research entails staying in close contact with the city of Palermo. The Palermo residency is available in two-week sessions.

Program Description

The International Studies for Sicily / Studi Internazionali per la Sicilia (SIS) is a non-profit, multidisciplinary institute dedicated to writing in all its forms and to philosophical, social and political research, located in Palermo. SIS is an independent research institute, with an annual research program developed with the aim of collaborating with public and private institutions in Palermo and local and international research centres. The International Studies for Sicily’s (SIS) fundamental role is to facilitate the individual research of each resident in relation to the region and the residents’ participation in a transdisciplinary and transnational program. The program provides access to basic technical support for the organisation of events such as symposia, debates, seminars and other forms of public presentations, as well as the publication of the Quaderni di SIS - SIS Field Notes.
