Eligibility

Emerging and established artists, working in painting, mixed media, printmaking, performance, installation, dance, musical composition, digital art, photography, video and installation are encouraged to apply. We do not have a kiln, large format digital printer, or flat bed press, but we are able to arrange for artists working in mediums that require those tools to use neighboring facilities. Starting in 2022, we will also be accepting writers. The Athena Standards’ spacious, open-format studios have abundant natural light, and the studio floor includes such amenities as a communal workspace/ woodshop, storage for works in progress, a kitchenette and lounge, keypad access and a security guard in the evenings, as well as a studio manager to provide assistance five days per week. Practice rooms for dance, choreography and performance, and a musical compostion studio with a piano, are located on the floor above the visual arts studios.

Number of Participants

We are able to accommodate 12 artists per month-long residency session. The Athena Standards Residency is a one or two month-long studio artist residency program in the bustling metropolis of Athens, Greece. There is a Residency Period in the Spring from April-May, in the Summer from June-July, and in the Fall from September-October. The In-Studio Residency program provides the artist with an open format studio in an expansive, repurposed commercial building, with other Greek and international artists. Professional development is integral to the Athena Standards Residency program, artists work closely with Art Historian and Curator Elizabeth Plessa to fully experience the Athenian Art scene and all it has to offer. The cost of the residency is now €1200 for one month or €2200 for both months.

Program Description

The Athena Standards Residency, in vibrant, urban Athens, Greece is accepting applications for the 2022 Summer Session (June-July). Please visit our applications page on our website to apply online. The Athena Standards Residency provides the artist with an open format studio in an expansive, repurposed commercial building in downtown Athens and shared housing with another residency artist in proximity to the studio. In addition, artists will work closely with Co-Founder Varvara Liakounakou and Art Historian Elizabeth Plessa, and staff, to ensure a guided and comprehensive introduction to the contemporary Athenian art scene.
