Open Call

Fully Funded Studio Residency for Artists who are Parents

Gallery Aferro

With Funding
Newark, United States

Eligibility

Visual artists and writers who are parents. Collectives are also welcome to apply, and there are no geographical restrictions. *The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a “Parent” simply as “a person who is a father or mother” -or- “a person who has a child”, and although that may be a nice, tidy definition, we think it oversimplifies the term. A “Parent” we think can be defined in many ways that are definitely not tied to gender binaries or “having” a child. This open call is open to anyone who has or shares legal guardianship over a person under the age of 18. The building is a kind of context within a context: an evocative repurposed 20,000 sq. ft. building in almost ceaseless use by a varied and lively population of gallery staff, volunteers, artists, youth, and community residents, all within the dense cultural, architectural and historical context of NJ’s largest city.

Number of Participants

As an artist-run space Gallery Aferro honors the layers of complexity that working artists negotiate throughout their lives. This is often especially visible in the practices and careers of artists who are also parents. Gallery Aferro is invested in uplifting artists to help them make art now, not later, and encouraging an environment where they can make work as large and complex as their vision. With the help of funding from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, Gallery Aferro offers this open call to all artists or writers that are parents* and would like to continue their creative practice in an engaged and energized studio residency in downtown Newark, NJ. The studio will be provided to the parent-artist for 6 months at no cost and will come with a $1000 stipend given at the beginning of the 6-month rotation. The stipend and free studio will facilitate the parent-artist in coordinating effective time and energy to be spent in their studios. Collectives are welcome to apply.

Program Description

For more than 10 years, resident artists at Gallery Aferro, many of whom are parents, have had 24/7 access to large studios, ongoing first consideration for a range of on and off-site opportunities, access to our studio blog, and generous one-on-one career and technical support from staff. The growing network of residency alumni is an increasingly powerful, multigenerational group of contemporary artists working across media. Participation in the residency program includes a platform to share and participate in a community of artists and others through informal networking and participation in seasonal open studios and artist talks at the gallery. As a presenting and workspace organization run by artists, we are dedicated to providing opportunities to our residents in the form of exhibitions, opportunities, advocacy, visiting curators, and letters of recommendation. The work-only studios average more than 600 sq. ft. per studio, and have dedicated storage space and high ceilings.
